What is it about?
The rise in intelligent video surveillance for public safety brings advancements but also challenges like handling vast data, efficient extraction, and storage. Surveillance videos often have long periods of inactivity, highlighting the need for efficient information extraction. Video synopsis helps streamline storage and analysis but struggles with heterogeneous devices (drones, IP cameras, etc.) that use different formats and software. Existing methods typically work only for single-view cameras. To solve this, we propose an interoperability-based panoramic video synopsis: Standardization: Convert videos from different platforms into a standardized format. Panoramic Stitching: Create a panoramic view by merging synchronized videos from multiple cameras. Extraction: Separate foreground elements (moving objects) from the background. Synopsis Construction: Build a comprehensive and concise summary of the surveillance footage. This method addresses interoperability issues, making video synopsis more efficient for diverse surveillance systems.

Why is it important?
Traditional video synopsis combines objects in space and time within a single camera view, while panoramic synopsis shifts objects across multiple camera views. Integrating various cameras for public space monitoring, where cameras differ in viewpoint, depth, frame size, vision type, and quality. Despite these differences, a common view finds homography between cameras, enabling their relationship. Challenges include varying frame rates and formats (e.g., MPEG, MP4, MOV, H.264), making multiview synopsis difficult. Modern cameras can construct synopses on the device using edge computing, but current techniques lack this capability. To solve these issues, we propose the Interoperability-based Panoramic Video Synopsis (IIPVS) framework.
Perspectives
Multiview camera synopsis is a complex engineering problem, and it took years to build a systematic solution. The proposed methodology is one approach to solving interoperability issues in video surveillance for constructing synopsis. Working on it was time-consuming, but I learned a lot solving the problem; I hope you find this article interesting.
