What is it about?
Embedded carbon emissions, created during manufacturing, are responsible for most of the carbon footprint of storage devices. In this work we focus on mobile storage devices, which are the dominant bit production target. By carefully allowing some data to gracefully degrade in smartphones our design can utilize low-grade flash. This type of flash has lower carbon footprint but is currently considered not relevant for mobile storage due to its short lifespan.

Why is it important?
Our design reduces the carbon footprint of smartphone storage devices, the most popular modern storage devices, by up to 40%.
Perspectives
Writing this article required an extensive and in-depth analysis of current trends in storage design and future directions. The analysis is beneficial to anyone interested in the future of storage, and also demonstrates how radically reducing the carbon footprint of computing devices requires non-conventional solutions.
