What is it about?

Quantum communication is currently being scientifically investigated in many projects. However, the application-oriented demonstration of a quantum communication network across all components, systems and processes required for practical operation is still lacking. In this application-oriented research project, a complete QKD link is to be set up in the telecom network with the aim of enabling a near-network test operation that covers all operational aspects of a future active deployment. Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences is primarily investigating the quantum-safe, crypto-agile and user-friendly design of interfaces as well as the implementation of an SDN controller for key routing and management of trusted nodes.

Why is it important?

Quantum-safe alternatives for currently used public key algorithms are urgently needed. They are used to secure numerous IT services and devices. In this context, QKD networks represent a promising perspective. However, due to the requirements of the QKD modules and the different components that have to interact with each other, they are highly complex and carry the potential for errors. In design and implementation, various aspects such as security, performance, usability or crypto-agility have to be considered. In order to be able to evaluate the network with all its complexity and to avoid future sources of error, a testbed close to the network is of central importance. We address key aspects such as component authentication, interface design, and the optimal design of key routings. These functionalities are crucial for the functionality and end-to-end security of key establishment in the QKDN.

Perspectives

The QKD network prototypes will be used to identify suitable practices for their implementation. In the future, the testbed will serve as a blueprint for operating QKD networks securely and enabling guaranteed quantum-safe communication. For example, for the communication of critical infrastructures.
