What is it about?

Origami offers an innovative way to implement touch (haptic) interaction employing a minimum of motor power, particularly in immersive worlds and robotics. This paper presents two novel origami-inspired haptic devices for Virtual Reality (VR). The Zipper Flower Tube is a foldable origami structure that can provide different stiffness sensations to simulate the elasticity of a material. The Shiftly is a shape-shifting haptic display that uses origami to enable a real-time experience of different shapes and edges of virtual objects or the softness of materials. The modular approach of our origami devices provides a high-fidelity, energy-efficient, and low-cost solution for interacting with virtual materials and objects in VR.

Why is it important?

VR has become more integrated into our day-to-day life. Origami structures enable low-cost solutions for touching things in VR, which are realistic, support a variety of experiences, and are affordable.

Perspectives
