Why is it important?
As the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) calls for a more competency-based approach to nursing education, nurse educators need to utilize innovative, yet evidence-based assessment strategies to test students' knowledge, skills and attributes (KSA).
Perspectives
Oral exams allows to educators/assessors to see, in real time students' knowledge, skills, attributes and communication skills related to whatever material is being assessed. It is a nice middle ground between written exams and simulations.

Nurse educators face many challenges when preparing the next generation of advanced healthcare providers. Decreasing resources and faculty shortages demand that nurse educators use diverse evidenced based assessment modalities to effectively assess students knowledge. Use of oral exams also provides nursing faculty the opportunity to provide student’s alternative methods to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and attitudes.
