What is it about?
We wanted to understand how AI can support pilots when making complex decisions such as where to divert to in case of emergencies or abnormal events. We therefore designed two different concepts for AI decision support tools for pilots and discussed them with eight professional pilots. The results of these interviews provide valuable insights for how to design AI decision support tools for pilots.

Why is it important?
The most common way to use AI for decision support is to let AI give recommendations for "good" decisions. These decision support tools often fail in real-world contexts that are as complex as commercial aviation. Our results highlight that there are other promising ways to support decisions with AI. Namely, instead of providing a possible end result (an airport to divert to, in this case), AI could help users to come up with better end results themselves. For example, AI can highlight potentially critical information that pilots need to consider when making a diversion decision.
