What is it about?

Holistic care is a comprehensive model of caring. It is important for a clinician to know his patient as a whole including body, mind and spirit rather than in parts. A common way to provide the holistic information is in the form of a patient-centred problem list, called Master Problem List (MPL). This paper describes the development and implementation of the Master Problem List in the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong. The most important factor for a technical system to be implemented successfully is engagement of clinical users.

Why is it important?

Clinical systems are means to assist healthcare professionals in the process of providing care to patients. Only healthcare professionals know the exact requirements in developing clinical systems. Therefore, engaging clinicians sharing the same goal to take the leading role in the project was a good start. With their buy-in, the dream could gradually come true. The desire of having a corporate clinical database was in line with the demand of clinicians so that patient based data could be built. Integrating the maintenance process of the Master Problem List in workflow helps to keep track on progress of patient condition.

Perspectives

Hope this paper gives some highlights and thoughts on the soft side when developing and implementing clinical systems.
