What is it about?
Many datacenters apply traffic shaping in their network fabric to prevent the network from getting too congested or to implement different QOS tiers. In this work, we show how such unavoidable effects in clouds have an impact on commonly used distributed applications and what experimenters should consider when performing quantitative evaluations in the cloud.

Why is it important?
Very few works have explicitly considered traffic shaping in the cloud and its effect on tail latency and performance variability.
Perspectives
To help researchers, practitioners, and application developers we uncover several practical implications and make recommendations on how certain applications are to be deployed so that performance is least impacted by the shaping protocols.
