What is it about?
Minecraft is the best selling game of all time, but struggles to support multiplayer services with many players even under optimal conditions. We develop a benchmark suite for Minecraft servers, and use it to examine the factors decreasing performance in real world server deployments.

Why is it important?
Our findings indicate that the situation is even worse than previously thought. Minecraft, and Minecraft-like games in general, run extensive environment simulation. This simulation can decrease the stability of the server, such that modern Minecraft servers can become unplayable or crashed with only a single player connected.
Perspectives
The popularity of online games has grown exponentially over the past decade but are not yet as popular as a research subject. Modern online games are no longer entertainment alone, but also cultural and societal phenomena with real world impact. I hope this article is convincing in showing that research in online games is interesting, challenging, and increasingly necessary.
