A research manifesto about the future of Business Process Systems augmented by AI

What is it about?

This paper presents the next generation of business processes that are powered by AI, that is, AI technology is employed to automate some aspects of the execution of such processes. We coined these processes AI-Augmented Business Process Management Systems (ABPMSs). The paper presents the vision and motivation for ABPMSs, their core characteristics, and the unique research challenges that stem from the need for process-aware information systems that draw on trustworthy AI technology. It also outlines a prototypical lifecycle of a business process that is executed, monitored, and improved with the help of AI. The goal of these ABPMs is to enhance the execution of traditional business processes with novel AI-based capabilities, making them more adaptable, robust, proactive, explainable, and context-sensitive towards the realization of a full autonomous enterprise.

Why is it important?

As automation is prevailing in our lives and AI is playing a major role in many of our business processes it is vital that development of future systems will take full advantage of the synergy between business processes systems and AI technology for the benefit of enhancing customer experience and adoption, and for driving business operation to gradually shift towards the autonomous enterprise. For this vision to come true, the manifesto lays out some of the most prominent research challenges that need to be addressed in the coming years.
