What is it about?

This paper examines initial findings around "Shouting Match", a two-player fighting game that uses shout commands for its main gameplay. It's also an exploration in how to foster emotion self-regulation among fighting game players through alternative play.

Why is it important?

In addressing toxic behavior in video games, researchers often focus on how gamers can practice emotion self-regulation--specifically in the context of team-based eSports. However, the fighting game community, a substantial part of gaming culture, has yet to be explored in this regard. Our paper for "Shouting Match" explores this research gap and provides preliminary insights for other researchers interested in designing embodied games and play interactions, especially for pro-social change.

Perspectives

It's wonderful to have the opportunity to share preliminary work on Shouting Match as we're continuing to develop the system. We as the authors hope that in our initial attempts of exploring embodied and alternative ways of play, we can compel other researchers to have their own explorations and learn from our study results as we are for future iterations of our game.
