What is it about?

Students are usually hesitant to ask questions when they are learning. Especially in an e-learning environment, they are alone and cannot find someone asking for help. We used a web camera to capture students' facial expressions and machine learning tools to detect the timing when they sought help.

Why is it important?

To our knowledge, there is no research to detect students' help-seeking behavior by using their facial expressions. This tool can be applied in an e-learning environment to help students or teachers to monitor their learning process and adjust their learning strategies.

Perspectives

I spend plenty of time developing a website to teach students about language analysis, like a real Linguistic Olympiad Competition. Amazingly, we could estimate students' help-seeking state by using their facial expressions. These results motivated us to develop more automatic AI functions on the website. I hope you enjoy this article.
