What is it about?
Self-disclosure to a social robot is a mental health intervention that can decrease stress for adolescents, but online digital robots are an under-explored medium which provide the potential to scale this mental health intervention especially in COVID-19 social distancing situations. Our online studies compared self-disclosure experiences with different robot prompt tones and self-disclosure platforms, while also investigating the moderating effect of negative attitudes toward robots.

Why is it important?
We outline design considerations for future human-robot self-disclosure interventions for adolescents as well as next steps for further research. One important result is the nontrivial effect of adolescents’ negative attitudes toward robots on their self-disclosure experiences, which should be taken into account to better inform future human-robot interaction studies and more accurately evaluate results.
