What is it about?
Cybersecurity is increasingly crucial to the success of innovative health technologies. In this paper, we present findings from a mixed-methods, design-led study of 6 cybersecurity experts’ and 9 Danish health technology startups’ cybersecurity experiences, revealing cybersecurity among startups as considered essential yet often elusive, one amongst many priorities, and often a self-taught discipline. We then leveraged these findings to inform the co-design of a bespoke Self-Assessment Tool, devised to support an increasingly cybersecurity conscious approach to development among health technology startups.

Why is it important?
Innovative health technologies can significantly improve our lives, and yet these days, their success increasingly depends on just how well-protected they are from cyber-attack. At the same time, it is increasingly through the work of innovative startup companies that new health technologies are developed. And yet, we know less about how these complex organisations go about securing their systems; potentially placing them at greater risk.
