What is it about?

We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and caregivers to understand their everyday data experiences. Our results provided a holistic view of their definitions and perceptions of data, their awareness and scenarios of data encounters, and the challenges they face with data. This paper reimagines the role of visualization in data accessibility in hopes to establish a research agenda for cognitively accessible visualizations.

Why is it important?

This work explores how people with IDD encounter data in everyday life and provides an in-depth look into their lived data experiences. It is an important first step toward understanding the in-situ uses of data among people with IDD and lays out concrete steps to design cognitively accessible data visualizations to address their real-life challenges.

Perspectives

Working with real people and sharing their stories has been a rewarding experience. We've uncovered many cases where they have been using data in a personal yet interesting way, and there is a lot to be done to make data universally accessible to people with varying cognitive abilities.
