What is it about?

Women in periurban Tanzania are the primary actors in the emerging marketplace of smartphone-enabled businesses, bringing in goods from around the world using little to no startup capital. We explore the new ways that they navigate trust online, discover how their gender impacts their labor, and the many ways in which leveraging smartphones is changing the marketplace in Bukoba.

This work helps shed light on an emerging economic phenomenon, that when supported by larger organizations, has the potential to benefit communities, specifically women, enter a new paradigm of economic opportunity and empowerment.
