What is it about?
Software is increasingly developed by teams where the team members are separated by location, time, and distance. To work effectively, such remote teams must use collaboration tools effectively. This paper contains the results of an interview study specifically looking into remote software teams and their use of collaboration tools.

Why is it important?
The new normal of work will likely consist of a hybrid working model where there is flexibility for team members to work remote from one another. Such hybrid working requires a remote-first mindset to ensure the team can be successful. This paper provides insights to both researchers and practitioners into what collaboration tools and practices can be helpful as well as challenges faced by remote teams.
Perspectives
The topic of collaboration in software teams has motivated me for many years now, both in industry and academia. This is the first paper I've written on the topic of collaboration and I appreciate the many insights provided by the study participants. I plan on continuing to study the topic of remote working and collaboration as I believe it is an exciting area and an area that can benefit many people given the rise of remote working.
