What is it about?

When we humans interact with each other, it is often unconscious things that make us have confidence in each other's abilities. Be it the reaction to one's own actions, the speed with which tasks are completed or the reaction to unfamiliar events. But how does this trust arise when factory workers interact with systems that use artificial intelligence? How can the teamwork between humans and AI-based systems (human-AI teaming) in the production environment be improved with software? In our work, we present a general software architecture that can be used to design such systems.

Why is it important?

AI-based software systems are also taking on an increasingly important role in production. The aim here is not to replace humans, but to support them in the best possible way. Therefore, the software architecture of such systems also plays a special role in enabling this special teamwork.

Perspectives

It gave me great pleasure to write this article because the software architecture developed not only addresses current challenges in the interaction between humans and AI, but is also open to future challenges. Also, I'm already looking forward to our next publication in this context focusing on the different levels of teamwork between humans and AI-based systems (Human-AI Teaming Levels).
