What is it about?

A language dies when the population that speaks it fails to pass it to their future generations. This study aims to address such problems for the Eskayas and Boholanos. The proposed EskayApp is an OCR Transliteration e-Learning Android Application that will serve as a tool to learn Eskaya. The app uses the k-Nearest Neighbors Algorithm (k-NN) for its business logic layer or backend and Supervised Machine Learning to create the application programming interface (API) for the said application.

Why is it important?

The EskayApp supports the thrust of House Bill 8785, an effort spearheaded by the government to promote, preserve, and conserve traditional writing systems and use these tools for cultural development. As the only Eskaya transliteration service existing, the project becomes the primary tool to teach, learn and spread awareness about Eskaya writing and language.

Perspectives

Transliteration of Eskaya characters into Latin text script is the main focus of this study. The machine learning model was trained using printed copies of the PARADISEC Eskaya Digital Archive of Eskaya font image files compiled by Piers Kelly, of which 24 samples will be used. The Android app is limited to one character per picture, using a 1:1 ratio on the camera access. The transliteration of words and sentences in Abidiha, characters in Eskaya Simplit, and handwritten characters are beyond the scope of this study.
