What is it about?
Social Making is a constructionist maker workshop using the BBC Microbit and hands-on problem-solving activities addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop seeks to promote social responsibility to children by building empathy and awareness on issues children witness in their local communities. It encourages them to think creatively to attempt to solve these problems using digital artifacts. In this paper, we share our insights from a workshop that we conducted in a low-income school wherein children designed personally meaningful solutions.

Why is it important?
Our workshop experience revealed how children gained more creative freedom when they were constrained to use limited tools and materials and limited time to develop solutions to complex problems. They learned to take responsibility and develop higher order thinking skills in the process.
Perspectives
Conducting this workshop in partnership with Salesforce India was a great pleasure. At Amrita, we strongly believe that the culmination of all research should be societal impact - this ideal was truly realized through this workshop.
