What is it about?
Recent years have witnessed the surge of biometric-based user authentication for mobile devices due to its promising security and convenience. As a natural and widely-existed behavior, human speaking has been exploited for user authentication. During speaking, the vocal tract, including the static shape and dynamic movements, also exhibits the individual uniqueness, and they are hardly eavesdropped and imitated by adversaries. Our work aims to employ the individual uniqueness of vocal tract to realize user authentication on mobile devices. On the other hand, we also realize the passphrase-independence for the user authentication to release the memory requirement of password and support a wider range of applications, such as the scam call detection.

Why is it important?
This is the first work to revisit the vulnerability of lip reading-based user authentication, and the pioneering work to realize the passphrase-independence for lip reading-based user authentication.
Perspectives
I hope this work could inspire the development of lip reading-based user authentication, leading to another perspective of voiceprint-based user authentication, to improve the security and performance of speaking-based user authentication.
