What is it about?

This paper explores how we can identify students that are likely to withdraw from an ICT course and examines what intervention measures might be appropriate to apply and the optimal moment to intervene. The study analyses what pre-tertiary factors, such as gender, citizenship, age, and entry qualification, are useful in detecting when a student is likely to withdraw from an undergraduate ICT degree.

Why is it important?

While the number of students commencing an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) degree has grown over the last few years, the high attrition rate in ICT degrees is a major concern of both the ICT industry and higher education.

Perspectives

This study was conducted as part of my PhD which was an evaluation of an ICT curriculum that aimed to increase student engagement and reduce attrition.
