What is it about?

Social robots have been designed with cute features to make them endearing to users. We analyze how the initial commercial reception of several social robots illustrates consumer attitudes to cuteness. We discuss the challenges of designing robots for social relationships.

Why is it important?

Robots designed to fulfill a social function are in development and becoming commercially available. It is important to understand how they may impact everyday life, and how particular design strategies shape our interactions and relationships with them.
