What is it about?

Rubik's cube is an ingenious toy; it can also be a musical instrument. In this article, we describe features and construction of the CubeHarmonic, ideated by Maria Mannone in 2013 and developed in collaboration with Japanese researchers. The presented prototype is based on magnetic motion tracking to map facets' positions into sounds. Each face contains a chord. Rotating the cube, we mix chords and chord sequences. The CubeHarmonic joins permutations, combinatorics, and music theory. It is like a modern development of a music & permutation tradition started with Mozart and other composers!

Why is it important?

People with visual disabilities can now learn and enjoy cube solving, being guided by sounds! Musicians have a new musical instrument based on combinatorics, and mathematics have a new teaching tool.
