What is it about?

One strand of research on groups argues that the composition of the team is the most important factor determining performance. Another strand suggests that building relationships among team members and making them feel comfortable with each other is the most important factor. We conduct an experiment to determine which of these factors is more important.

Why is it important?

We show that in the context of our experiment, neither factor was more important than the other in determining team outcomes. In fact, it may be that creating an expectation that the team will perform well is more important than the specifics of the group's creation.
