Why is it important?

This is one of the first studies to actually investigate experiences with autonomous driving. We asked Tesla drivers about their experiences with the automation, what automation surprises they experienced and how it influenced their trust. We found Tesla drivers to be experimenting to understand the limits of the automation and quite resistant to automation surprises, quickly readjusting their expectations and incorporating into their understanding of how the autonomous features work. The drivers did not lose trust in the automation or show any tendencies to avoid using the automation.

Perspectives

These were great participants to work with, highly enthusiastic and engaged. We are thankful for the support of the Tesla owners group in doing this research.
