What is it about?

This describes how artificial intelligence techniques were used to orchestrate the anthem Oe to Joy (by Beethoven) in different styles, using various artificial intelligence techniques. These techniques were developed in the Flow Machines project, an ambitious research project to study how style can be learned and manipulated by a computer.

Why is it important?

Ode to joy is the anthem of the European Union.. We show how artificial intelligence can be used in creative ways to produce original orchestrations of musical pieces.

Perspectives

This work led to many results in the Flow Machines project, notably the album "Hello World", which was the first main stream pop album composed with artificial intelligence. The use of AI for assisted music creation is still a problematic area as most of the research intends to produce fully automated music generation algorithms, which often produce music that is not interesting enough to be released.
