What is it about?

Adaptation was the key to survival when Darwin published his book in 1842; these concepts are still relevant today because the same environmental and evolution of changes exist in organizations today. The business environment is no longer reliant on long-term planning and predictability has become challenging based on rapid technology changes and environmental demands. To address these challenges, IT professionals must assume responsibility for their own careers and not rely on organizations to provide career paths and support. Traditional career management, when available, does not typically address the rapid changes needed to keep careers focused and on track for success. Proactive approaches are now necessary for individuals to actively manage their careers with less reliance on traditional career paths.

Perspectives

Despite the age of this article, this has remained relevant for individual career management, especially now with social media playing a role in hiring decisions, cyber security, and the potential for ransom threats escalating. IT professionals also must realize that they need to focus on people skills in addition to IT skills, as working with others especially in team situations is usually required in organizations.
