What is it about?
Digital transformation is not just about introducing new technologies. It is also about helping people, organizations and communities work together, share knowledge and make better operational decisions. This paper introduces ROOTS, a reference architecture designed to connect people, technology, operational data and institutional knowledge within a continuously learning ecosystem. ROOTS brings together four components: a Cooperative Operational Digital Twin (CODT), a Community Intelligence Network (CIN), Operational Knowledge Preservation (OKP), and a Community Intelligence Cycle (CIC). Together, these components help represent operational environments, validate information through community participation, preserve useful knowledge and incorporate operational feedback into future decisions. The paper illustrates the architecture through an agricultural setting, demonstrating how the approach can support collaboration between farmers, experts, institutions and digital systems.

Why is it important?
Many digital transformation initiatives focus on technology, automation and data collection. However, valuable operational knowledge is also held by people and communities, often in fragmented or undocumented forms. ROOTS provides an architectural approach to bringing these different sources of knowledge together. It emphasizes collaboration, institutional memory, continuous learning and human accountability when using AI-enabled recommendations. The broader objective is to make digital transformation more sustainable, inclusive and responsive to real operational needs. The architecture is designed to be adaptable beyond agriculture, including energy, manufacturing, healthcare and other complex operational environments.
Perspectives
I believe the next phase of digital transformation should focus not only on making systems intelligent, but also on making operational ecosystems more capable of learning and improving collectively. My professional experience in engineering, technology operations and enterprise transformation has reinforced the importance of connecting technology investments with people, processes, governance and measurable operational value. ROOTS represents my effort to bring these perspectives together into a reusable architectural framework. I see it as a starting point for further research, practical implementations and collaboration across industry and academia.
