What is it about?

Breathing causes tiny shifts in body weight that change how a bed frame vibrates. ABreath uses a small device attached beneath the mattress to send a barely noticeable vibration through the bed frame and measure how it changes. In a study with 19 volunteers, participants followed regular, deep, fast, and breath-holding patterns in simulated breathing tasks while lying on a bed. The system distinguished normal from unusual patterns, including during tests with nearby footsteps and other interference.

Why is it important?

Breathing monitors can be uncomfortable to wear, and cameras, microphones, and other sensors may raise privacy or usability concerns in a bedroom. ABreath explores another approach: it measures how breathing changes a vibration sent through the bed frame. This approach may enable more comfortable and privacy-preserving monitoring of abnormal breathing during sleep.
