Why is it important?

This is the first time ever that DNA computing has been shown to work at scale. The article demonstrates the writing of ~1 million words of text into DNA molecules. It shows how this text can be searched using DNA chemistry. The demonstration achieved perfect recall and high precision. All previous DNA computing demonstrations were at a smaller scale or exquisitely designed for a specific application. This is the first time that a commercially available platform has been described and demonstrated. The platform is scalable and capable of supporting many different types of applications.

DNA computing can achieve massive parallelism and energy efficiency unlike any other platform, and this is the only DNA computing platform likely to scale to real-world use cases.
