What is it about?
The integration of facial expression analysis with Internet-of-Thing (IoT) systems has significant potential across diverse scenarios. IoT-enhanced MaE analysis enables real-time monitoring of patient emotions, facilitating improved mental health care in smart healthcare. Similarly, IoT-based MiE detection enhances surveillance accuracy and threat detection in smart security. We aim at providing a systematic understanding of how facial expression recognition can empower IoT systems, enabling more responsive, intelligent, and emotion-aware technologies in fields like healthcare, security, and beyond.

Why is it important?
Our work highlights the critical role of facial expression analysis—particularly macro- and micro-expressions—in enhancing the intelligence and responsiveness of IoT systems. By enabling emotion-aware applications, the integration of MaE and MiE analysis with IoT opens new frontiers for personalized, adaptive, and context-sensitive services. The study not only surveys recent advancements in expression recognition but also provides strategic insights into future research directions, emphasizing its importance for innovation across multiple smart environments.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. We hope that our work can serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in facial expression analysis by providing fundamental research resources and a comprehensive research paradigm.
