What is it about?

When you open the camera on Instagram or TikTok, do you expect it to be looking back at you? At the University of Wisconsin - Madison researchers uncovered two AI models used by each app. TikTok's model always watches you when the camera is open within the app and tries to estimate age and gender. On the other hand, Instagram's model activates when you select an image to upload as a Reel and looks for over 500 different concepts within that chosen image. The researchers measured the biases of the models. They interviewed users of the apps about how they felt about being exposed. None of the users knew the models were there. Did you?
