What is it about?

This paper focuses on how small universities can address challenges like declining enrollments and financial pressures by introducing Master's programs in STEM fields that are practical and job-focused. These programs, called Master of Professional Studies (MPS), prepare students, especially international ones, with the skills they need to succeed in the workplace while helping universities attract more students and increase their revenue. It also discusses how universities can support international students through career services, internships, and visa guidance to enhance their success in finding jobs.

Why is it important?

This work is important because it offers small universities a way to address critical challenges like declining enrollments and revenue shortfalls. By adopting practical STEM Master’s programs (MPS), these institutions can attract international students, provide them with job-ready skills, and improve their career prospects. This not only helps universities stay financially stable but also prepares a skilled workforce to meet the demands of industries. Additionally, supporting international students through tailored services enhances diversity, strengthens global connections, and contributes to the economy by addressing workforce gaps in high-demand fields.

Perspectives

From my perspective, this publication underscores a significant opportunity for small universities to transform challenges into growth strategies. As someone deeply interested in bridging gaps between education and industry needs, I see MPS programs as a vital tool for aligning academic training with real-world demands. This work is especially personal to me because it highlights the value of international students, their potential to enrich campuses, and the role universities can play in shaping a globally competent workforce. By addressing barriers like visa complexities and providing hands-on learning, we’re not just improving education but also creating a sustainable pathway for both students and institutions to thrive.
