What is it about?

Pilot studies are small, early-stage experiments used to test ideas before conducting full-scale research. However, when it comes to Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), these studies are complicated and time-consuming due to the need for real-time observations, multitasking, and data analysis. This paper introduces PilotAR, a desktop-based tool that helps researchers run pilot studies more efficiently using Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays (OHMDs), like AR smart glasses. PilotAR allows researchers to monitor participants in real-time from multiple perspectives, take automatic notes, and quickly analyze data. It also supports multi-experimenter collaboration, making it easier for teams to work together. By reducing the complexity of running AR/MR pilot studies, PilotAR helps researchers test ideas faster, gain better insights, and improve AR/MR technology development. The tool has been tested in real-world case studies, showing that it saves time, reduces workload, and enhances research efficiency.
