What is it about?
Can ChatGPT help students answer assessment questions without learning efforts? This study gives mixed answers. It all depends on the question type, how students ask questions, and how they interpret the results. While the findings are specific to computer engineering students, the methods are of general value for replicated studies in other academic fields.

Why is it important?
These results are important for understanding the impact of large language models on academic integrity. It helps design homework assignments and open-exam questions that can hardly be be solved by ChatGPT and other large language models.
Perspectives
This is the first empirical study that analyzes the impact of question type on the ChatGPT responses to students' prompts. Indeed, the questions and prompt are specific to computer engineering, but the methods are of general value and can be used in replicated studies in other fields of study.
