What is it about?

This paper explains the concepts together with the signal processing math on determining the incident angle to be used for calculating the position of an unknown entity. The hardware, firmware and software for a a fully working system is presented. Calculation of the angle is alternatively achieved by means of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) or Multiple Signal Classification (MuSiC). For the latter, novel methods on extracting the most probable angles from the spectrum are elaborated.

Why is it important?

On the one hand, this paper presents all aspects (concepts, mathematics, firmware, hardware, software) relevant to the construction of such a system. On the other hand, innovative methods for extracting spectral parameters are presented that are not only applicable to Multiple Signal Classification (MuSiC). Instead, these approaches can be easily adapted to other methods where the spectra are calculated as an intermediate step.
