What is it about?

The reasons why the International System of Units (SI) prefixes are used to represent multiples of 2, and the problems arising from misuse and the search for solutions are discussed. In addition, newly defined binary prefixes for multiples of 2 are introduced in detail.

Why is it important?

SI prefixes are being misused to denote the multiples of 2. Indeed, there are new binary prefixes to denote multiples of 2 such as kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi, pebi, exbi, zebi, yobi. In order to prevent conceptual confusion, which is very common all around the world, and ensure the correct use of prefixes, the values expressed by the prefixes in both systems are introduced in detail.
