What is it about?

Metaphorical design is a participatory design method that uses metaphors to generate new ideas for systems design. The process has three activities that comprise the generation, evaluation and development of metaphors. We expand the idea by introducing metaphors as a projective technique. This way, participants can describe the new system (in our case a research data platform) by a metaphor, and thus by drawing on their available knowledge. We can then further process the metaphors to generate ideas for new functionality.

Why is it important?

We live in an increasingly digital world. Many digital solutions already exist, and when new platforms or services are introduced, it is often the case that existing solutions are adopted without questioning. This can hamper innovation. Therefore, we present this participatory workshop using metaphorical design that can help to systematically consider new ideas and concepts.
