What is it about?
Variable fonts will change the very nature of typography in future interfaces and provide a powerful tool for systematically exploring typographical expression and readability. In this paper we are exploring how variable, grade, might impact glanceable and paragraph reading in light and dark polarities, modes.

Why is it important?
The research illustrates the potential of using variable font axis as a research tool, demonstrates how one variable can influence readability of a surface for both short (glanceable reading) and longer exposures in Light and Dark Polarities. The repeated measures results from over 400 participants demonstrate superior reading performance in light polarity, which could be due to increased luminance in that mode.
Perspectives
I identify as a dyslexic, acting as lead author and doing most of the writing for this, my first academic paper submitted to a leading conference seemed like a really big task. I learned to use Latex, PCS and probably did more ineffective proof reading than many lead authors! It's been worth the effort to give me confidence to start sharing some of the other research we're undertaking to help Digital designers make wonderful engaging and readable services for the world!
