What is it about?
Explaining to new users how to use immersive VR applications can be difficult. This challenge is due to the fact that users need to manipulate and interact with unfamiliar material and technologies. This learning phase is critical to ensure the best experience possible with the application and thus favor the adoption. In this paper, we investigate the current practices in VR tutorials and onboarding supervised by an instructor. We evaluated 21 VR tutorials and interviewed 15 instructors. Based on the results, we built a framework to describe VR onboarding and provide guidelines to help create onboarding.

Why is it important?
The onboarding phase of an application is critical for its adoption. In our paper, we identified the main challenges hindering this onboarding and introduced potential solutions to improve the onboarding experience.
Perspectives
I hope this article will encourage the development of new tools to support VR onboarding. As VR applications are meant to become more complex, the current practices will become unfit for onboarding. It is thus necessary to have access to efficient and easy-to-use tools for tutorials or instructors.
