What is it about?

Multiple realism factors, such as visuals, audio, haptics, interactions, and others, can influence the user experience in immersive virtual experiences. With such virtual experiences becoming increasingly more realistic, it is essential to understand their impact on users. In this paper, a literature review is performed to understand which realism factors have been studied so far and how each of them affected the different aspects of user experience. This study also presents what realism related terms have been used and their definitions.

Why is it important?

Our study synthesises what realism-related variables in virtual experiences were studied so far, what aspects of user experience were considered in those studies and the impact of those realism variables on each user experience aspect. This allows researchers to better address gaps in the literature, either by replicating less supported data or by studying variables not considered so far. It also helps developers refine the realism components of virtual experiences according to the specific aspects of the user experience they want to address. It also helps the scientific community use terms related to realism more consistently and thus, avoid misinterpretations.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a challenge and a journey. It tried to make sense of all of the terms used related to realism in immersive virtual experiences and to take all the variables studied in this regard together into a bigger picture that anyone can understand. As such, I hope readers find this work useful in the development or research of their virtual experience.
