What is it about?

We explain how simple and more complex games can be easily prototyped via a simple breakdown system and via Ryan’s cross-cultural Self Determination Theory (SDT).

Why is it important?

Understanding key elements of games and simple but fun exercises can not only help quickly develop serious games but also maintain the fun and imaginative key aspects of games. These tools and exercises can also help refine ideation with prospective clients.

Perspectives

Games are not easy to learn and easy to master, like conventional software. They are great sandpits to learn through failure, the more challenging they are the more rewarding, and designing them with appropriate balance and pivotal mechanics is more of an art form than some might expect, and this is also true for serious (educational) games.
