What is it about?

This work introduces a Systematic Literature Review of one year of advances in virtual machine consolidation. It provides a discussion on methods used in each step of the virtual machine consolidation, a classification of papers according to their contribution, and quantitative and qualitative analysis of datasets, scenarios, and metrics.

Why is it important?

Through this SLR, we expect that researchers can get a comprehensive understanding of the three stages of VM consolidation, namely, Physical Machine Classification, Virtual Machine Selection, and Virtual Machine Placement, based on recent papers on the subject. For each of the stages, we describe which techniques have been used and a summary of how they work. Furthermore, we provide statistics that indicate trends (such as type of method used and type of experiment performed) and also insights about simulation parameters.

Perspectives

Although many works in the literature claim that they present contributions to the VM consolidation problem, some address only part of the problem. As such, we would like this article to contribute to advancing cloud computing research by providing an easy-to-read, illustrated, and in-depth analysis of the three steps of VM consolidation.
