What is it about?
Test smells are poor design or implementation choices in test code. Previous research showed that they can make tests harder to maintain and less effective, so researchers have developed methods to detect them automatically. However, developers still had few tools they could use inside their development environment to find and fix them. In this paper, we present DARTS (Detection And Refactoring of Test Smells), a plug-in for IntelliJ. DARTS detects three types of test smells—General Fixture, Eager Test, and Lack of Cohesion of Test Methods—at commit level, and lets developers fix them through automated refactoring.

Why is it important?
With DARTS, developers can find and remove test smells as part of their normal work, when they commit their changes, without using separate research tools. This can help keep test code easier to maintain and more effective.
Perspectives
DARTS is one of my first research papers. Test smells were well studied, but developers had few tools to find and fix them inside their IDE. With DARTS, an IntelliJ plug-in, we tried to close this gap: it detects three test smells at commit level and supports automated refactoring.
