What is it about?

In this article, we focus on the study of 3D masonry buildings, such as a Romanesque church or a set of Medieval walls, under the action of seismic simulations, with the aim of achieving a realistic and accurate visual effect.

Why is it important?

The main contribution of this work is to provide a tool for historians and curators that helps them better understand historical events where an earthquake took part, assessing the effects that such an event might have on current cultural heritage structures. The technique presented in this article is completely based on off-the-shelf tools and can be used both on a single or a set of masonry buildings for making cultural heritage studies, but that also can benefit video games and film visual effects set in historical contexts.

Perspectives

We developed this technique with the simplicity of use and limited accuracy in mind. It is obvious it should not be used as a tool to assess safety conditions in masonry buildings, but instead we hope it will be used a be a tool to help stakeholders predict the effect of seismic movements and their possible consequences, as well as provide accurate enough results for the entertainment industry (e.g., movies and video games).
