What is it about?

College admission is the first step to higher education. Retaining and ensuring students are successful is equally critical. We analyze quantitative and qualitative factors to increase the success of college students. We find that student motivation - as a construct from student background, student choice, and student preparation - is crucial.

Why is it important?

The dependence on scientifically-generated methods for student enrollment retention strategies tend to be the opposite extreme from humanistic-based initiatives for student support services. We chose to pursue a path that combines enrollment management predictive analytics and social construction methods for ensuring student retention and persistence to graduation. Retaining college students is a key for stable enrollment and gets away from the dependence on incoming freshmen as the main indicator of university success or failure.

Perspectives

This article was co-authored by a faculty member, an administrator, and staff members as a representation of the voices who chose to "reach across" university demarcation aisles. The middle management perspective is key to university growth, as we personally engage with students daily who show the struggles of just being a college student. Connecting the data to the individual is crucial to supporting college students socially, so they can perform better academically.
