The effect of thinking style preference on the need of explanations in a music recommender system.

What is it about?

We investigated whether users with a different thinking style preference also had an a different preference for receiving explanations in a music recommender system mobile app. We investigated both the interactions with the application as questionnaires users filled in after using an application with and without explanations.

Why is it important?

Due to the increased impact of AI and recommender systems on our daily lives, it is important to provide explanations so users understand why the system generates a specific output. However, to keep these systems user-friendly, we cannot provide all users the same explanations. As a consequence, we need to know which persons need which kind of explanations and in which situations.
