What is it about?
Modern artificial intelligence technology holds both promise and peril. What's behind the design of A.I. programs? How can we prevent such programs from doing harm, yet still put the technology to good use in providing so many potential benefits?

Why is it important?
Artificial intelligence, Generative A.I., ChatGPt, and their kin are on the cusp of penetrating all aspects of modern society and institutions. This article takes a balanced approach in explaining both the potential benefits and the serious concerns that this technology raises with an eye toward giving the reader a stronger foundation for understanding how we might chart a constructive path forward.
Perspectives
A.I. is too often written about by either true believers or alarmists. I hope that this article provides a more balanced and constructive perspective. I view Generative A.I. in 2023 as analogous to the Internet in 1994 - a technology that is at a critical tipping point, one that is here to stay and not going anywhere, and about to be deeply embedded in systems that affect our day-to-day lives. The big takeaway is that, yes, there are concerns, but it's also not something that we can - or should - run away from. "Wishing it away" is both denialism and a missed opportunity.
