What is it about?

This research shows that it's possible to attack two recent watermarking schemes to show that although watermarks have been embedded in content to protect owner rights, unfortunately it is still possible for someone else to claim ownership instead, essentially by showing that the illegitimate claimer can also have his/her ownership watermark be detected in that watermarked content.

Why is it important?

It's important to be able to ensure that owners can rightfully claim ownership for their content, especially when these are shared online, and therefore there's risk that others may claim ownership instead. Schemes that are designed to protect ownership, should be secure and not be attackable, otherwise they defeat their original design purpose.

Perspectives

I think it's crucial for the public to be aware that some schemes that are designed to protect owner rights, may not necessarily be able to do so. Highlighting the insecurity of these schemes enables the public to know which ones could be securely used and which are not able to protect their rights
